“It’s good on everything except banana pudding.” Anyone who knew George Stallings probably heard him make that claim when boasting about the sauce that bears his name. George and his brother Ed invented the recipe for George’s in 1975. For years, the brothers had been treating friends and relatives to their famous barbecue sauce that they developed in George’s home kitchen…some of their first batches were cooked in a dirt floor garage! By the mid-1980s, their sauce production had grown into a real business. For years, Beth Chappell made weekly trips to see the Stallings brothers, each time buying a gallon of her family’s favorite sauce. “Every time we’d stop by, they would ask if we wanted to buy the business,” said Beth. “I didn’t know anything about running a sauce business. But I sure knew that what George said was true: ‘It’s good on everything except banana pudding.’” Beth and her husband Tim purchased the business in 1992 and expanded production in the family’s hometown of Nashville. Under Beth’s ownership and vision, George’s grew into one of the most sought-after barbecue sauces in the Carolinas! In 2006, Ashley Chappell Hassell joined the family business as its office manager and marketing director. She took great pride in learning the business from top to bottom. Ashley took over the day-to-day operations of George’s in 2012 and later purchased the family business in 2017. In 2018, Brian Hassell took a leap of faith and joined his wife, Ashley, at the family business. The Hassells plan to grow the George’s brand, while keeping the focus on delivering a high-quality product – still proudly by hand, in small batches in Nashville, North Carolina.
